November 2009 President's newsletter
I have just had the pleasure of attending the Tin Can Bay P-10 State School’s 75th anniversary dinner dance held at the community hall. The night was a huge success with many families of those that have attended the school over this period enjoying the comradeship and festivity of the night. The organisers of the function are to be commended for the way the event was delivered and for the effort they contributed.
Sunday 15th November is the day for the Tin Can Bay P-10 State School charity
golf and bowls day. As usual there will be a monster raffle in the afternoon
to complement the bowls and golf competitions so come along and support our
local school.
“The Lost Arts Heavy Horse Field Day” held on earlier in the month
was also a great success with amounts varying from $30,000 to $45,000 being
touted as the amount donated to the “Angel Flight” charity. The
club was happy to be able to help and to be one of the contributors to this
event.
The Army held an information night regarding the development of Camp Kerr in its E.L.F.Stage 2 overall upgrade of facilities across Australia. $75 million is to be spent on Camp Kerr over the next few years with a $10 million contract to be started next year. All the money is being spent on upgrading the facilities (e.g. firing ranges, special weapons range, etc) with no additional personnel being located at the camp. Enoggera barracks in Brisbane are to receive $800 million in upgrades and will not be closing down or relocating.
The Productivity Commission is currently reporting on Australia’s Gambling Industries. This enquiry is the first since 1999 and the draft report has been released with over 600 pages of findings and recommendations. Clubs Queensland, along with all other state bodies, is responding through Clubs Australia as soon as an analysis of the findings can be completed. The final report is expected in the first half of next year. If the recommendations are implemented it will mean huge changes to the way clubs operate.
After our overnight break-in at the club and the recent daylight armed hold-up at Pomona Bowls Club staff will be extremely vigilant about entry into the club. Security of staff is paramount to the clubs operations.
Elections. The Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday 18th October with a reasonable number of members in attendance. The accounts for the previous financial year were presented and discussion on varying topics took place with the meeting concluding in a short time. My position as president, Lyn Watson’s position as Vice President and Janet Riebel’s position as treasurer were returned unopposed. The four previous members of the Board, Don Annis-Brown, John Baker, Bob Callier and Ross Thorburn, were returned in the voting. Laurie Raeburn, who has previously been a member of the Board, and Ken Domin are the new members joining the Board.
Trading. Trading was steady during the month of September, being slightly up on last years figures, although our takings are down over the current three month period.
Sport. The Clubs Queensland “Smile for a Child” charity golf and bowls day will be held on Friday 30th October. Proceeds from this fun day will be given to the charity along with other money making activities (wobblers, raffles, etc). If there is one event guaranteed to be full of fun then this is it, so make sure you join in.
The ladies golf championships have completed two days of the event with the
remaining two days to be completed this week. The best of luck to all those
competing.
If you want to see the best of the junior golf talent on the Sunshine Coast
then attend the Trevor Nobbs Homes Junior Carnival on Sunday 1st November. Some
of the competitors can hit a ball distances that you can only dream about.
The Golf club will be holding its annual general meeting on Sunday 22nd November
with nominations for positions on that committee just opened. The Ladies Bowls
club will be holding their annual general meeting on Friday 4th December and
the Mens Bowls club on Saturday 12th December.
Developments. I would like to thank the Golf Club for their contribution of over $9,000 for the purchase of a brand new scarifier (used on the greens to cut and break up the top layer of grass and soil). Head greenkeeper Mick Hall has already been utilising all the recently purchased equipment so that all his green areas can be kept as playable as possible.
The large LED screen has been partially fixed so that it is in an operable state. Further developments are on the way so keep your eyes open for all the current opportunities.
Two brand new poker machines have been installed and have proved to be a popular distraction. Further changes will be taking place within the next few months to give added interest to the room.
Promotions. The Christmas season is again rapidly approaching and the Board has decided to again distribute cheer amongst our members. We will be giving away a number of half leg hams as we have in previous years. They will be distributed via the kiosk at reception and will be commencing in late November/early December in time for your festivities.
Unfortunately the Friday barefoot bowls fun nights have been temporarily suspended
due to the need to core the top green. Hopefully it will again be in action
in early December.
See you at the T.C.B. Country Club.
Stephen Wallis.
President TCBCC.
