May 2009 President's newsletter
The support from our local community for the commemoration of ANZAC day was inspiring. Our club participated in the wreath laying ceremony for the first time along with a number of local organizations and school groups. After the ceremonies the Legacy challenge in golf and bowls was followed by a charity raffle and due to the efforts of the two sporting clubs a total amount of over $1,200 was raised for Legacy.
The month of May keeps us busy with the Labour Day holiday on Monday 4th May, Mothers Day on Sunday 10th May (make sure you book early for the restaurant) and Gympie Show Day on Friday 15th May as well as a number of charity days.
Our first charity day for the month will be in aid of Cooloola Coast Medical Transport on Sunday 3rd May with golf and bowls complementing the huge raffle to raise funds for this most important function of our area (the envy of much larger populated areas). On Sunday 24th May it will be the turn of Cooloola Coast Ambulance and Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesavers to raise as much money as possible with their charity event. Both of these days are in support of our local charities and I would encourage all to either, compete in one of the sports and/or come along to the club and buy tickets in the gigantic raffles the two organisations hold on the day.
Trading. The wet weather during March kept a number of the sporting membership from attending the club as regularly as normal but our trading was as good as could be expected. This shows that our social members are utilising the club premises in an ever increasing pattern.
As our trading figures have not caused any panic in the Board it has been decided that the membership fees for the 2009-10 year will remain the same as this year. Arguments for slight increases on a yearly basis were considered but the Board felt that the fees should remain stable for another year.
Sport. The mens golf pennant team have completed an enjoyable, although not successful (trophy wise) season with many a story to be told of the one that got away. Due to wet weather the ladies golf pennant team is playing their last game at the time of writing with a slim chance of making the finals and we wish them well. Our bowls pennant teams will be starting their seasons shortly with the mens team attempting a trifecta.
There was a large rollup of bowlers for the Kurt Steinscherer sponsored day showing that good prizes will draw them in.
Developments. The kitchen attached to the function room has had problems with a leaking roof for some time. Various tradesmen and others have tried to fix it. Hopefully the cause of the problem (channel gutters not being wide enough to handle downpours) will be repaired as soon as the dry weather continues long enough to take part of the roof off.
The caterers for our restaurant/bistro (Leanne Childs, family and staff) have informed us that they will be ending their service at the end of June. We wish them well in any new venture they take on. The club will be advertising for a new caterer shortly.
The club will be installing an LED sign at the front of the clubhouse. The sign will be used to promote the clubs activities as well as inform the local population of any imminent disasters or problems. We hope that information such as flooding, fires, road closures, etc will be displayed.
Promotions. Friday night’s member draw has reached the $2,000 mark and again it has been decided to give away $1,000 of the jackpot to lucky members. If the jackpot isn’t spun, then other members will be given chances to win some or all of $1,000 – another reason to be at your club.
A Trivia Night has been arranged for Saturday 30th May and it has been decided
that all profits will be donated to the Tin Can Bay P-10 State School for their
trip to Canberra. As this will be a charity event the club is not restricting
the numbers attending and may have to use the main bar area for the event if
we have a large attendance. Please contact Leisa in reception to make a booking.
See you at the T.C.B. Country Club.
Stephen Wallis.
