June 2010 President's newsletter

The first charity day of the year was reasonably successful with more than $2,000 being raised for the Cooloola Coast Medical Transport. Volunteers from their organisation as well as club members and supporters ensured that the day ran smoothly. The amount raised is down slightly on previous years but the general trading conditions of our area are responsible. The money raised will be put to good use by this organisation to provide transport for patients to keep appointments with medical staff in numerous locations. Thanks to all businesses and other organisations that helped or donated during these quiet trading times.

The next charity day was held at the club on Sunday 23rd May in aid of the local Ambulance and Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesaving Club with the usual golf and bowls competitions and huge raffle on the day. This was also highly successful with over $2,000 being shared between these two worthwhile organisations. Local businesses came to the party with donations and the raffle seemed to be never ending – thank you to those people.

The continuing concern in our area at the moment is the proposal for a marine park in the area from Fraser Island to Double Island Point. Although the club remains apolitical it is felt that this decision will affect all of the local population. Businesses associated with the fishing industry will suffer, residents will want to move if they cannot fish in the close area and other businesses will decline because of these actions. A number of meetings have or are being held at the club to discuss this matter with both commercial and amateur fisherman agreeing about the detrimental possible marine park declaration. Hopefully the correct decision will be made to satisfy all parties concerned.

The club runs a courtesy bus to help members and guests to travel safely between the club and home seven days a week during the late afternoon and evening hours. The bus normally leaves the clubhouse on the hour for the Tin Can Bay area and departs on the half hour for the Cooloola Cove area. Whenever possible, announcements are made over our sound system warning patrons of an impending bus departure. This cannot always be done due to time constraints, entertainment noise, etc. Patrons should be aware of the departure time of their bus and be available at the front entrance in preparation of its departure. The courtesy bus has to keep moving to fulfil the requirements of ALL patrons and cannot be responsible for patrons who don’t make an effort to be at the departure point on time. Please help by being prepared and do not abuse the driver if you miss a bus.

Trading. All members should have received their renewal notice for membership fees for the 2010-2011 year. The current years fees run out on 30th June, 2010 and golfers and bowlers will have to pay to play as a visitor if they have not renewed their membership by the due date. There have been slight changes to the fees for bowlers and golfers.

Sport. The Queens Birthday weekend will have our annual Mitre 10 championship day for golfers and bowlers on Sunday 13th June. Bookings for either event fill quickly so make sure your place in the event is confirmed.

The Ladies Bowls club held a highly successful open mixed fours carnival on Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th May with a number of locals in the prize money. A number of changes may occur before next year’s event to make sure both greens are completely full. Those that competed thoroughly enjoyed the social atmosphere and the keen bowling.

The Dodt Cup was fought for on Sunday 23rd May and unfortunately our highly successful team had an off day in the finals and we now have an empty shelf in the club where the trophy used to be. As a means of redeeming our pride the IGA shield for bowls will be fought out between our club and Cooloola Coast Bowls club on Sunday 20th June. We hope that we can retain the trophy on the day.

In golf the 4BBB Mixed Stroke championship was held early in May with qualification for the zone championships. The men’s event will be held over the weekend of 26th & 27th June and the ladies will be holding their championship over two Wednesdays 9th & 16th June again with qualification for the zone. Hopefully those that win the right to represent the club at a higher level can perform at their best on the zone championship day.

Staff. I am pleased to inform you that our bar attendant Fiona had a second daughter earlier in May. Mother and daughter are both doing well and we await Fiona’s return to brighten up the bar area.

Promotions. The Friday Night members draw gave away $1,000 on Friday 30th April with no one able to take away the major money. However there were ten happy members with money in their pocket. The jackpot was reduced back to $1400 for the first draw in May.

Saturday 5th June is the night that our next Trivia night will be held. Make sure you book a table with our reception staff so that you can have a night of fun and hilarity.

The Sunday raffle gave away $500 worth of IGA vouchers on Mothers Day 9th May. The jackpot of IGA vouchers was reduced to $500 at the beginning of May and another $500 voucher giveaway will take place again.

Craig, our chef, produced an exquisite feast for those patrons that attended the Mothers Day luncheon. Both mums and their doting children had a great meal on the day. A number of patrons took the opportunity to stay for the raffle and participate in the voucher giveaway.

See you at the T.C.B. Country Club.
Stephen Wallis.
President TCBCC.
