June 2009 President's newsletter
June brings the official beginning of winter and the end of June will see a number of events taking place. The local school children will be on holiday from Saturday 27th June to Sunday 12th July inclusive. The current caterers will be leaving on 28th June with the new caterer starting shortly after. The end of the financial year starts us thinking about completing tax forms for another year.
The Cooloola Coast Medical Transport held their golf & bowls charity day on Sunday 3rd May and after all proceeds of those two events were combined with the receipts from the raffles, an amount of over $2,700 was raised. Although it is a well run organisation further donations to keep the car fleet (currently 5) rolling are always welcome. Unfortunately the weather controlled the Cooloola Coast Ambulance & Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesavers charity day events on Sunday 24th May with visitors from Southport playing the locals in the bowls event whilst the golf had to be cancelled to a later date. The monstrous raffle in the afternoon was successful and after the golfers have contributed I am sure that over $2,000 will be raised for the two organisations. I would like to thank all the local businesses that supported these organisations and I would encourage you to use them whenever possible.
We are continuing to trial the use of the bus for the Saturday Club. Our driver, Norm, will pick up patrons at Cooloola Cove & Tin Can Bay returning them to the club for the 10am opening. This requires patrons to book their trip on the bus on the previous day (Friday). Patronage has increased and the trial will continue.
Trading. Bar trading during the month of April was slightly up on last year's figures but our gaming machines decided to be extremely generous during the month and, along with the $19,000 jackpot that was won, our total profit for the year is slightly down on last years. We are spending regularly in order to improve the club and its amenities. This spending is being closely monitored to make sure that we don’t end up in arrears.
As mentioned in the previous newsletter membership fees for the 2009-10 year will remain the same as this year. Most of you should have now received a renewal notice, but if you haven’t contact reception at the club to correct any problems (e.g. change of address, etc).
Sport. Success is sweet. The men’s bowls team competed for the Dodt Cup (singles, pairs & fours) at Albert Bowls Club on 23rd & 24th May. After seeing off Kenilworth (last years champion) in their first round and another team in the semi-final they managed to defeat the other local team Cooloola Coast in the final. The Dodt Cup has been returned to its rightful resting spot on the shelf at the bowling end of the club. Congratulations.
The big day is almost upon us for the Mitre 10 bowls & golf fun/championship day. It will be held on Sunday 7th June with the major prizes being worth winning – the competition will be hot.
The Veteran Mens golf championship is struggling to be completed due to the weather recently. After attempting to make up for one wet day Mother Nature decided that the last two rounds would again have to be rescheduled. Hopefully a result can be achieved shortly.
A number of Tin Can Bay finest lady golfers attended the Country Womens Golf Championship held at Mareeba during the latter period of May. They were successful in having a great time although no trophies were in their possession when they returned. They can now look forward to competing in our own Ladies golf 36 hole 4BBB stroke championship over two days during this month.
This month sees the men’s bowls pennant team starting their competition (maybe a trifecta of wins) at the beginning of the month whilst the ladies start their onslaught at the end of the month. Best of luck to both teams.
On Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th of June golfers will be competing in the 4BBB 36 hole championship in order to qualify for the Sunshine Coast championships (males, females & mixed). We wish you all the best of luck.
Developments. The function room kitchen has now been fixed. I would like to thank Owens Handyman Service for the patience and persistence in eradicating all the problems. Hopefully the kitchen can now be put to its full use. This group has also recently completed a storage area outside the bowlers competition room to be used for bowling equipment.
With the help of a large posthole digger and a supply of trees from Cityfarm, over 150 trees have been planted on the golf course along Tin Can Bay/Gympie Road. I would like to thank Sue Picken and her crew for the time she has put into this project to make sure we had natives of the area to brighten the entrance to Tin Can Bay and to promote our golf course/clubhouse. Our greens staff kept working all day to make sure that all trees were planted in an appropriate manner. Trees have also been planted by the greens staff in the front of the clubhouse to hide/beautify our colourbond fencing. They have also been busy on the golf course erecting safety fencing next to the 18th tee. This fencing was a joint country club and golf club venture. They will also be planting more trees between the 11th green & the twelfth tee to fulfil safety requirements.
We have recently been having trouble with our coffee machine breaking down regularly. Currently demonstrations of other coffee machines will give us a suitable replacement. Please be patient.
Toilets are the word on everyone’s lips. Those on the golf course are either open now or will be shortly and I ask golfers or other users to follow the instructions inside the toilets so that the composting works successfully. The toilets inside the club are to be renovated with those with entrances from the sports lounge due to be closed for repairs after the long weekend.
Hopefully the LED sign at the front of the clubhouse will be installed within the next month or two. The order has been placed and the parts are being assembled.
The on line golf booking system is scheduled to be installed, along with a touch screen, shortly after the long weekend. The system will be released to members as soon as it has been thoroughly tested. Education on how to use the system will be available to all.
Promotions. Nobody could spin the jackpot at the Friday night’s member draw on 1st May but 10 members walked away with $100 each – they were definitely the ones with smiles on their faces. The Jackpot has now increased to $1400 and is still rising.
The Trivia Night on Saturday 30th May was still to be run at the time of writing.
I would assume that over $1,000 was raised toward the Tin Can Bay P-10 State
School trip to Canberra. I hope that nobody was inconvenienced in the bar area
by its use during the night for the trivia attendees. Again Leisa in reception
has made extreme efforts to make this event the success it deserves.
See you at the T.C.B. Country Club.
Stephen Wallis.
President TCBCC.
