January 2012 President's newsletter
The “wet” season is upon us although celebrations on Christmas Day were not affected in our neighbourhood. The drenching that may have slowed Santa from delivering his gifts was only a minor inconvenience. I hope that all members were able to connect with family and have an enjoyable festive season. Now we can bring on New Years Eve and a more productive 2012.
It is concerning that the vandalism bug seems to be spreading into our neighbourhood with flags being taken from our golf course and a tee sign with a concrete base being uprooted. If you see anything occurring on our golf course, bowling greens or club house please pass on the information as soon as possible.
A query regarding the members amenities figure in the 2010/2011 accounts was raised at the AGM with further investigation to be pursued. The Tin Can Bay Country Club purchases a number of golfing items on behalf of the golf club and during the previous year these items were included under the trophies account. For the current yearly account these items were included under the members amenities account and resulted in large variances in both accounts. I must apologise for not including these details in an earlier newsletter.
During December both the mens and ladies bowl clubs had their AGMs. Stephen Garbutt is again leading a keen group in the mens bowls but with one position still to be filled. The ladies bowls club has a new president in Carla Ashley and a large number of new office bearers with her. We wish both clubs the best for the coming year. A special mention goes to Kelvin and Erica Young for their involvement in coaching and encouraging some of the younger generation in the game of bowls.
Australia Day falls on Thursday 26th January with a public holiday to celebrate the birth of our nation. There will be the usual Australia Day golf stroke championship, changed to 18 holes this year, and the bowlers will be competing in the annual “Skirts v Shirts” event. A barbecue lunch will be supplied to those competing.
Vince and Janet Reibel will be supplying trophies for the golf and bowls competitors on New Years Day for those brave enough to back up after New Years Eve.
Trading. Our new Asian buffet night is slowly attracting numbers to the restaurant on Thursday nights with the change of Roast night to Wednesday only slightly affecting numbers. Once the festive season is over we will be able to gauge more accurately the success of these nights. Other changes that have been implemented will also show whether further savings need to be made.
Sport. I was amazed to see the golf course being open for competitive golf on Boxing Day after the deluge over the previous days. The drainage work carried out during the year seems to be achieving its goal. Congratulations to the greens staff and those involved from the golf club on their successful work. The grass coverage on the fairways has to be seen to be appreciated (unfortunately my ball doesn’t seem to appreciate the fairways).
The mens bowls club held a successful open fours ham day during December with a number of our clubs players taking home the bacon. Both the ladies golf and the ladies bowls are having a rest period during the warmer December and January summer. They will return in the new year.
Promotions. All attendees had a thoroughly enjoyable evening when the Mega raffle and cash giveaway night was held. The raffle and cash draw was completed in record time with cash prizes up to $100 being won whilst others walked away with the solitary dollar.
The 2012 year can be welcomed in with a great night at the club with music being supplied by 4 piece band “Los Cobras” who will be playing their various styles on the night. The restaurant will be open from 5.30pm to 8pm with the normal menu plus four members’ specials to tempt your taste buds. The two for one steak feature will not be available on this Saturday night. Children have to be off the premises by 9.30pm so that the older generation can enjoy themselves. Not a night to be missed.
The Sunday raffle gave away $500 in cash and club vouchers on the Sunday before Christmas so that members and visitors should have been well cashed up for this festive season. The Members draw of $1,400 was won between Christmas and New Year to complete a very generous cash giveaway.
Lucky members picked up their hams from our Christmas Ham giveaway and twenty
Lions Club Christmas cakes were distributed via the Sunday and Thursday raffles.
See you at the T.C.B. Country Club.
Stephen Wallis.
President TCBCC.
