December 2009 President's newsletter
It is the season to be jolly – so the song goes. The recent heat and humidity makes it hard to be jolly until you are safely in air-conditioned comfort. The Christmas season is upon us and we should be pleasant to all. Let’s all get into the spirit and make our lives happier over this special period.
The Tin Can Bay P-10 State School charity golf and bowls day was its usual
success with $1600 being raised for the P & F. Many thanks to those businesses
that contributed to the raffle prizes on the day, they were greatly appreciated.
Trading. Trading continues to be down slightly on last years figures as is the case in most of Queensland. The Board is being cautious about our expenses and watching what we spend.
Sport. The golf and bowls fun day will be held on Monday 7th December starting at 9am. There will be 9 holes of golf and 10 ends of bowls. The day is being organised by Ann and Barry Hudson and has been a huge success in previous years. All club members are invited to join in (equipment will be supplied) and the cost for the day will be $5 per player, which also includes lunch.
The Clubs Queensland “Smile for a Child” charity golf day was held in late October and all those who attended were well rewarded. The proceeds of this day plus the two raffles, the bar wobblers and the donation tins totalled $2,400 which will be distributed by the clubs organisation to four children’s charities. Thanks to all who contributed to our clubs part in this fantastic fundraiser. I would particularly like to thank our receptionist Leisa Eichmann for the time and effort she puts in to co-ordinate these events.
The bowlers are performing magnificently for the club. The ladies triples team of Shirley French, Aileen Grant & Jill Callaway reached the final of the Gympie zone champion of champions trophy. After leading the match at the time the weather intervened (rain bucketed down making the green unplayable) the resumption of the match two days later proved to be harder. The scores were tied until the defining end when an errant drive from the opposition gave the local girls 8 shots from a possible 9 and that was the trophy to Tin Can Bay.
Recently. The IGA shield was played at Cooloola Coast Bowls Club with our club only ever having a few wins at the opposition venue. Twenty eight players represented each club with our boys and girls leading by 2 shots at the half way point. They then came storming home in the second session to win by 42 shots and retain the shield. Thanks to IGA for supporting this local contest.
The Golf club held its annual general meeting recently and I would like to congratulate those members who have been elected to run the golfing affairs for the club. It will sometimes appear that you are not appreciated for the work you contribute but you are definitely needed to make the events occur. Changes to the golf handicapping system during the next year will keep you on your toes.
The Ladies Bowls club will be holding their annual general meeting on Friday 4th December and the Mens Bowls club on Saturday 12th December.
Tin Can Bay has a shortage of junior sports available for our local youth. The club hopes to support most junior sports clubs in their endeavours to be successful. The Cooloola Coast Crocs Swimming Club is again into their swimming season with regular competition nights being held each Thursday commencing at 6pm. If you would like to see some possible future champions in action then go to the Tin Can Bay pool and have a look. The club has seen fit to support this sporting organisation and the swim club will be receiving $2,000 shortly.
Developments. As trading (income) has declined slightly over the previous few months spending on developments has been put on hold for a short time. Any urgent changes will be dealt with as they occur.
Further changes to the poker machine room should occur before Christmas with
players having different choices of machines.
Promotions. The Christmas Ham giveaway has commenced. All members have to do
is swipe their membership card in the kiosk to have a chance to win a half leg
ham. Each member will only be entitled to win one ham. Lucky members will be
able to pick up their hams on Thursday 17th December in time for Christmas festivities.
Do you enjoy boxing? If you do then get down to the club on Wednesday 2nd December
for the fight between Australia’s Danny Green and multiple world title
holder Roy Jones Jr. It promises to be one of the best fights of the year. It
will cost you extra to get it on Austar and it’s free at the club with
other extras thrown in. So get your mates together and make a night of it.
The club will be holding its usual entertaining New Years Eve festivities with
free admittance to members. Live music will be played until the midnight countdown
and the courtesy bus will be running all night to transport revellers. There
will be plenty of seating available but the early attendees will have the best.
The theme for the night will be black and white so time to search through the
wardrobe to dress suitably.
The dining room, with Chef Craig Stelmack at his best, will be having a special dining experience on New Years Eve. There will be a six course fixed menu for those who love fine food. The cost for the evening will be $55 per head. No other meals will be served on the night.
See you at the T.C.B. Country Club.
Stephen Wallis.
President TCBCC.
