August 2010 President's newsletter
We are in the middle of winter and yet the dreaded cold has not really hit
us. There have still been many pleasant days, in between some rain showers,
for the sporting members to show off their skills. Luckily the kids have returned
to school after two weeks of mayhem.
We will shortly be voting in the Federal government elections. Make sure you
attend your local booth and don’t be fined.
Trading. The club is still trading slowly as are most in Australia.
The economy is picking up slowly and we will have to tread a careful path to
hopefully return to our previous trading highs.
The bi-annual CPI increase in August in the cost of beverages and the recent
wage increase granted in July will possibly lead to an increase in drink prices
shortly.
Most members have paid their fees by now but a reminder to anyone that hasn’t
yet paid to see Sherill or Leisa in reception.
Sport. The Tin Can Bay Golf Open will be held on August 1st with an expected field of over 100 players. Hopefully the weather will play its part. Sunday August 8th is “Angel Flight” charity day with competitions for both golfers and bowlers taking place. This is not a day to be missed with prizes being supplied by Darryl Lee of Lees Fishing. He will also be holding the “Lost Arts Heavy Horse field day” at his property 81 Osbourne Road, Wallu later in the year.
The ladies bowls pennant teams have completed their matches during the month
finishing in creditable positions in both grades.
The mens bowls pennant team start their season on Saturday 31st July with a
home game. This year they will be playing teams from the northern section of
the Wide Bay district and we hope they will have as much success as previous
years.
The mens golf championships for the club for 72 holes will be held over two weekends during August and the ladies 72 hole club championship will start on Wednesday 25th August. The best of luck to all competitors.
Problems have been occurring recently with golfers trying to use the on-line booking system. We are monitoring the problem to locate the exact cause and hopefully will have it fixed as soon as possible.
Developments. Most developments have been put on hold until our trading improves but, in conjunction with the Golf Club, the drainage around the course is under review.
Catering. Our chef Craig has now been with us for over twelve months building a solid clientele of satisfied customers. There are many opportunities to taste the fine fare with special member priced meals on Thursday nights, after the raffle, Wednesday lunches, Friday night Coast Guard fish and chips, Saturday family meals and Sunday roasts. You should not walk away from the restaurant unimpressed.
Entertainment. Saturday 10th July saw the younger generation strutting their stuff with the local band “Kronic Fatigue” supplying the music. There is definitely a generation gap between most of our members and those that attended on the night. The numbers were good and the youngsters enjoyed themselves. The band will be doing a repeat performance on Saturday 7th August hopefully attracting a similar audience. The noise level is not one that is appealing to all members but let the kids enjoy themselves on the odd occasion.
Promotions. The new poker machine promotion has been in operation
since the beginning of the month with players winning various amounts of money.
The jackpot has not been won at the time of writing but some lucky punter will
take away the big prize.
The Sunday raffle gave five lucky ticket holders $100 each of IGA vouchers for
spending at our local supermarket. The jackpot returned to $500 of vouchers
and along with the cash prize of over $800 has not yet been won.
See you at the T.C.B. Country Club.
Stephen Wallis.
President TCBCC.
