April 2009 President's newsletter

April, again, is a busy month with the celebration of Easter from 10th to 13th of the month and then the commemoration of ANZAC day on 25th of the month. The club, in conjunction with the local RSL and Lions clubs, will be holding the Legacy challenge in golf and bowls. After attending the commemoration ceremonies earlier in the day these competitions are not to be missed. The club, by law, cannot and will not be open until 1pm on ANZAC day. As ANZAC day falls on a Saturday this year there will be no public holiday declared on another day.

I would like to congratulate members and visitors to the Country club for their generous donation of change at the bar to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. A total of $416 was collected and together with $4,000 from the club, partly raised by the golfing fraternity (over $1200), it is hoped that the Australians affected in this disaster may be able to restart their lives.
The State election is now over and little has changed. We hope the state government can fulfil all the promises made during the election campaign.

The month of May will have two charity events for golf and bowls with Cooloola Coast Medical Transport holding their event on Sunday 3rd and Cooloola Coast Ambulance and Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesavers holding their event on Sunday 24th. Both of these days are in support of our local charities and I would encourage all to either, compete in one of the sports and/or come along to the club and buy tickets in the gigantic raffles the two organisations hold on the day.

There has been a practice by a number of patrons recently of taking opened alcoholic drinks outside the front entrance of the club. The club has now added another notice to the reception area to warn patrons that it is against the law to do so. This will stop those patrons who utilise the courtesy bus service from drinking on the bus. No opened drinks will be allowed on the bus and no drinks will be allowed to be opened on the bus. Swearing and foul language will also not be tolerated. This is a service to members and visitors and the club wants to make the journeys as pleasant as possible.

Trading. February is the short month – number of days, amount of money spent in the club, etc. It is probably the time of year to have all renovations completed as trading reduces. This year’s figures mirror those of last year and we are still spending carefully to upgrade our facilities and to support the local community.

Sport. The Tin Can Bay community can be proud to say they have raised an Australian champion (maybe there are more). Carl Christiansen has been selected for the Australian Under 17 Volleyball team to play in Thailand in May this year. Carl has been part of the local school training scheme under the guidance of teacher and dedicated coach Dave Arthur. The club has previously supported Carl with his travelling expenses and we congratulate him on his selection and wish him well for the future. We hope you won’t forget your home town when you are in the big time.

The club has supported both the local swimming club and a number of their swimmers when competing at various venues around the state. A number of these swimmers are, at the time of writing, representing our zones in the schools state championships and we hope they are successful.

The Super Challenge bowls is now over and the results of the last few games were not as impressive as the first few. A lot of lessons have been learnt during the competition (some dented egos) but competing in a higher level of competition was appreciated by all. Both the mens and ladies teams represented Tin Can Bay proudly.

The mens golf pennant team is continuing with a win in the latest round, although other results have not been favourable. Tin Can Bay hosted the other pennant teams during the month and the hospitality of our team is the envy of other clubs. Well done, team.

At the time of writing Tin Can Bay ladies golf pennant teams were hosting their round of the pennants after rain had cut short their attempts to host the previous Friday. On this day there were copious amounts of cake and other deserts that had not been consumed. The first two rounds of the “B” grade pennants saw Tin Can Bay in the winner’s seat and, with Jonahing them, I hope they can continue along this successful road.

Developments. The toilets on the golf course are almost completed with the weather being the main stumbling block to them being used.

Promotions. The Trivia Night was a huge success with many participants wanting to book for the next one which should be held on a date to be decided in June. The night ran much smoother with lessons learned from our first night. Saturday night appears to be the night that patrons enjoyed as well. The night was booked out and early bookings are required to get a seat/table at the next one. I would particularly like to thank Leisa for all the extra work she puts into these nights.

The $2,000 cash promotion at the Sunday raffle brought quite a number of patrons into the club. Our dart and balloon method of distributing the money proved to be interesting and manager Mark will have to think long and hard for a different method of distribution for our next $2,000 giveaway in June.

See you at the T.C.B. Country Club.
Stephen Wallis.
